Earn MCLE credit at Conference!

Who knew MCLE credits could be good for your soul?

Join us at the LimmudLA Conference February 12-15, 2010, and earn up to 11 MCLE credits at an all-inclusive price.

MCLE-eligible sessions cover a variety of topics, including:

The best part is that the rest of the weekend will offer so much more than just the legal sessions. You'll experience live music, internationally known scholars, a story slam, deep political and philosophical discussions, controversial panels on cutting-edge issues, hands-on craft sessions, prayer, meditation, films, yoga, sing-a-longs, workshops, and so much more.

Choose from more than 150 presenters from around the globe leading more than 300 different sessions on topics ranging from Talmud to psychology, from pop culture to Bible, and from drama to Israeli politics. The Conference also features late night jams, karaoke, dancing, comedy, and great food (certified kosher, of course).

And you won't have to leave your family behind while you get your credits. Teens have their own lounge and special programming throughout the weekend, while Camp LimmudLA provides childcare, fun, and learning for babies through 5th grade.

You get MCLE credits, all of the programming, 4 days and 3 nights of hotel accommodations (gym, swimming pool, and other amenities), and all meals for one price. The cost is $550 per adult in a shared room or $800 per adult in a single room; price includes all food, lodging, registration fees but not incidentals or travel costs. If you earn MCLE credit, some or all of the Conference cost might be tax deductible; consult your tax advisor for more information.

Last year, we sold out with 800 people, so register now!

To ensure that you will be eligible for MCLE credit, register for the Conference and enter “MCLE” in the “For Office Use” box that appears after selecting your room type.

Efforts to Address the Iran Threat and How You Can Avert Nuclear Iran
Marc Carrel and Sam Yebri
Unless we act now, we will soon wake up to a nuclear-armed Iran. That morning, the world's leading state-sponsor of terrorism and violator of human rights will have the capacity to carry out its promise to “wipe Israel off the map” and will trigger a Middle East nuclear arms race. Learn what leading Jewish organizations and synagogues in Los Angeles are doing to advocate forcefully for increased American and international economic sanctions on Iran, convince government pension funds and corporations to terminate all business with the Iranian government, and raise public awareness about the threat that a nuclear-armed Iran poses to the entire world. Each of us can make a difference through concerted, unified local activism. Learn how.

Marc Carrel is Chair of the Jewish Public Affairs Committee of California (JPAC), the largest single-state coalition of Jewish organizations in the nation. JPAC advocates on behalf of traditional community concerns, and broadly shared values that affect the citizens of California. Marc also serves on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles as Vice Chair for Community Relations. Marc has been working on public affairs and public policy issues for his entire career, having served as California Assistant Secretary of State, Deputy Chief of Staff to a senior Member of Congress, Senior Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor, and as Counsel to the Speaker of the California Assembly.

Sam Yebri is an attorney at the law firm of Proskauer Rose, and previously served as a law clerk to the Hon. A. Howard Matz. Sam is the president/co-founder of 30 Years After, a civic action organization whose mission is to promote the participation and leadership of Iranian-American Jews in American political and Jewish life. He serves on the Regional Council of the Progressive Jewish Alliance and the Board of USC Hillel, volunteers with Bet Tzedek, participated in the Jewish Federation's Geller Leadership Program and New Leaders Project, and is an AIPAC activist. Sam graduated from Yale University and the USC Law School.

Environmental Law and Halachah
Albert Cohen
This session will explore what Jewish texts and halachah have to say about the environment and our role in protecting the environment. It will address the question of what obligations we have when the halachah has not yet developed a detailed approach to particular environmental problems.

Albie Cohen is an environmental lawyer in Los Angeles. He has a law degree and Master's Degree in Public Health. He worked for the United States Department of Justice where he was lead counel in the Love Canal case and has been practicing environmental law for over 30 years. He is an active member of B’nai David and tried to devote a reasonable amount of time on a regular basis learning Jewish texts.

Who Is a Jew?
Aaron Edelheit
The British Supreme Court has taken up an explosive issue about a Jewish Day School that didn't allow in a converted Jew's son. This raises the question of who is a Jew and who isn't and who gets to determine it. This talk will be a discussion group.

Aaron Edelheit is President of Sabre Value Asset Management, a private money management firm that invests in stock market and distressed real estate. He is also active in Jewish philanthropy and is on the Board of Directors of the Moishe House Foundation.

Mastering Makhloket: The Great Common Ground
Michael Feldman
This session features practical means of progress in modern Jewish controversies. With the help of a religiously diverse opinion panel, we will test common values and solutions to problems discussed in the first session and address hot-button issues we did not yet explore. Looking at the larger picture and a bit of classic text, we will also try to identify truly universal Jewish values. Will opposing sides find a joint way forward? Are there helpful truisms with which everybody in the room will agree? Come tell us!

Mastering Makhloket: Seeing Past Red
Michael Feldman
How can religiously diverse Jews safely debate same-sex marriage, Obama, conversion, Israel, or family drama? This hands-on workshop explores texts in the Jewish tradition of peacefully handling both personal and ideological arguments and uses a step-by-step process to reveal false assumptions and emotional truths behind our animosities. Work through your own conflicts, share ideas, or just write and listen. Then leave ready to forgive a friend, or at least the author of the last Jewish Journal opinion piece you didn’t like. All are welcome; families are especially encouraged.

Michael Feldman strives to make communication and collaboration central ideals in his career as an employment attorney and mediator. He hopes to recruit professional advisors of all stripes for an interdisciplinary network that addresses economic and job-related woes. Michael, his multi-talented wife Andrea, and their 18-month-old dream-of-a-daughter Eloise are all happy to be Limmudniks, members of B'nai David Judea, and residents of the Pico-Robertson community.

He also spends a significant amount of time as a lay leader in various philanthropic activities.

Why Jewish Women Should Not Marry
Esther Macner
The “Halachic Pre-nup” and why Jewish women should not get married without one. How do these pre-nups function in Jewish Law and in American Law? Israeli law? Will it solve the crises of the “Agunah”?

Esther Macner is a New York attorney who practices Divorce and Family Law, with an expertise in the juxtaposition of Rabbinic Courts with secular law. She is a member of the Agunah Task Force of JOFA (Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance) and has practiced as an attorney/advocate in various Rabbinic Courts in New York. Rabbi Banet’s Charming Snake
David Nimmer
This session explores a dispute between two giants of the 1820s, the Hatam Sofer and R. Mordekhai Banet, regarding copyright protection over a prayer book printed in Frankfurt in 1800. Along the way, it uncovers the fascinating back story and ventilates the thought processes that go into creative lawmaking and grappling with changing circumstances.

David Nimmer is a professor at UCLA Law School and former president of B'nai David Judea.

Joseph’s Recourse: Law & Bible
Shep Rosenman
We will closely read one or more biblical texts and compare them to literature and/or case law in which a related narrative appears and discuss similarities and differences between the biblical, literary and legal approaches to the issues identified.

Shep Rosenman is a father, husband, musician, and an avid student and teacher of Jewish prayer and Torah. Somewhere in all of this he finds time to practice entertainment law and serve on the LimmudLA Board of Directors.
